Diet and nutrition are all of the hype and as we enter the new year, diet and health is at the top of conversations topics. From paleo to keto to vegan, there are a lot of popular diets out there. One that has been the focus of scientific study for the past 20-30 years is the Mediterranean diet. As the name implies, this diet is consistent with how people eat in countries near the Mediterranean sea. It's rich in olive oil, light foods, cereals, fruits, and wine. In other words, there's a plethora of healthy fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants.

While it's been a known fact that Mediterranean diets promote healthy weight, decrease risk of heart attacks/strokes, and increase in longevity, scientists have found that it can possibly also prevent rheumatoid arthritis in individuals who smoked or used to smoke. In an article published in Arthritis and Rheumatology in September 2020, an analysis of about 63,000 women in France showed that there was decrease prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis in the group of women who smoke(d) and ate a Mediterranean diet. Just some food for thought.
